MEALY PARROT FACTS
DescriptionThe Mealy Parrot is one of the largest American parrots. It is mainly green with a whitish mottling on the back and neck. It has a short square tail and the end half of the tail is yellowish. The wings have blue-black trailing edge to the wing and a small red wing patch. Some birds have a few yellow feathers on the top of the head, and the two subspecies, virenticeps and guatemalae, have a blue tinge to the crown. The eyes are maroon to orange surrounded by a white eye-ring of bare skin. The Mealy Amazon is a social bird and is often found in pairs or in flocks. Food fruit, seeds, berries, nuts, blossom, leaf buds Breeding The female lays three or four white eggs in a tree hollow. The eggs hatch after about 26 days. The young leave the nest about 60 days after hatching. Range southern Mexico, Central America and South America. Notes The Mealy Amazon is popular in the pet trade, and is commonly bred in captivity.
